Prescription Glasses care Dos and Don’ts.

Going by the current studies a majority of people around the globe use some kind of eyeglasses for one purpose or another. Prescription glasses are one of the widely used types of eyewear by many.

Prescription glasses are special kinds of eyeglasses that are usually prescribed by an optometrist for various vision corrections, helping you guide through your daily activities. They come in all forms, shapes, and materials.

With all that said, buying a good pair of prescription glasses is more of a big-time investment. People often take a lot of effort to pick the frames, materials, and colors to suit their style, skin, face, and personality. But once you have your favorite pair of glasses at hand, often this care is gone.

Negligence and poor cleaning can damage the lenses and frames of your prescription glasses over time. To maintain their look and longevity, you need to show some love and care to your prescription glasses to ensure their proper functioning for a long time.

You need to take proper care to make your prescription glasses last and function longer, if you don’t take care of your prescription glasses they will be of no use to you at any time.

Follow these easy dos and don’ts to clean, care and maintain your prescription glasses better for a longer time.

DO: Use the cleaning cloth that comes with your prescription glasses.

Always use the soft microfibre cloth to clean your lenses that come with your glasses. Your prescription glass lenses are so delicate that even a little speck of lint or dust can cause scratches on the glass, especially if you use a rough cloth, even your normal handkerchiefs or shirts. It is best to listen to your optometrist and use the microfibre cleaning cloth, if possible try to get some extra microfiber cloth to keep it stocked at places you often go like in cars, desk draws, bed stands, etc.

DO NOT: Use kitchen towels or tissues to wipe your lenses.

The tissue papers may look soft but they needn’t necessarily be soft on lenses. Especially the textured paper towels or tissues which are even rougher on delicate lenses like the ones that are made from plastic. However, you can use these to clean your frames though, but for lenses,” NO”.

DO: Use warm water, rubbing alcohol, or light dishwashing liquid to clean your lens.

Ideally, it’s best to use the special cleaner that your optometrist recommends for your lenses. However, using warm water with a drop of mild dish cleaning or rubbing alcohol can be an effective option as well. These easily available solutions clean your lenses, remove dirt and dust, without damaging your glasses or emitting any harsh chemicals that can hurt your eyes. Just mote to wipe the water completely clean as leftover water droplets can leave small spots later when dried.

DO NOT: Place your glasses with lenses facing downwards.

When you place your glasses on a table or any other surface with lenses down, there are more chances of getting scratches on your lenses. Though this is one of the common mistakes that most folks make, to save your lenses from scratches it is best to avoid placing your glasses with lenses facing downwards. Also, avoid placing bare glasses without any protective cover or box in your pockets, purse or bags. It is best to carry your glasses in the protective case that comes along it to carry or store them carefully.

DO: Wash your hands and use both while wearing and removing your glasses.

This may sound pretty basic to many but it is a very important point to note. Often, people tend to carelessly place or handle the glasses after which can cause unexpected damages to your glasses. When you pull out your glasses to remove the one you are unnecessarily straining the frame joints making it bend or break eventually, especially if you are using tight fitted glasses.  Ideally, it is better to wash your hands and use both your hands to remove your glasses safely.

Prescription glasses are used for better vision and it stays almost on your eyes for most the day. Remember, taking good care and cleaning it right can make prescription glasses last and function longer. If you do not take care of or store them right, in no time they will be damaged.

Keep the above handy tips to maintain your prescription glasses right and remember to go for an eye check as per your optometrist’s recommendation. If you think your current glasses are giving your clear vision consult your optometrist and get your new pair of glasses.
